More than 40 students in the Hillsboro School District have expressed interest in a school esports team this fall, according to high school principal Terry Baesler.
Baesler and Hillsboro-Central Valley athletic director Dave Nelson informed the Hillsboro School Board on Monday that the creation of a Burros video game team has caught the attention of gamers.
“There’s a lot of kids interested in it,” Baesler told the board.
“I know some in our household are,” said Hillsboro School Board Chair Tim Kozojed.
Nelson said he’s been informed that a fledging league of esports teams could begin play in North Dakota this fall.
Current plans call for practices to start Oct. 14 with regular-season competition slated to run through mid-December. A postseason tournament would follow sometime in January, according to Nelson.
