Hillsboro’s eighth annual Chili and Chocolate contest at the Vets Club is expecting a good number of entries tomorrow (Saturday), especially in its popular Best Homemade Soup category, back for a fourth year.

The mid-winter event at the Vets Club will recognize and award cash prizes and ribbons in three categories: best chili, soup and anything chocolate.

The three categories are open to any and all kitchen magicians in the Hillsboro community and beyond.

The chili contest has been a part of the annual cook-off since it was started in 2011.

Anything chocolate became part of the scene five years ago. Soup was added to the mix in 2015.

The chili contest this year is welcoming mild and hot entries.

Myrna DeLeon won the chili cook-off last year. Barb Nelson won the soup contest and Julie Foss took home top honors in the anything chocolate category.

The Feb. 9 event starts with judging at 4 p.m. The entry deadline is 3:30 p.m. The entry fee is $5.

The anything chocolate category can include chocolate cake, pie, muffins, brownies, fudge, cookies and chocolate bars – anything chocolate, according to this year’s organizers.

Connoisseurs and lovers of chili, chocolate and homemade soup will welcome the opportunity to taste-test the entries following the judging at 4 p.m.
